RETRIEVING LOANED ITEMS from CELEBRITIES

There are honest and decent people in this industry who will be anxious to help you succeed, but remember: If it can go wrong, it will go wrong. Document each and every business deal. I once approached a huge megastar’s publicist about wearing a valuable watch. The publicist said to me, “Don’t give him anything of value; he loses everything.” I took her advice.

I rarely had to chase down a client’s product, but it did happen. In my case, it was up to my client to decide how far to pursue the return of its merchandise with a celeb.

Here are a few suggestions to avoid losing valuable items to celebrities:

Create a form that clearly shows the items being borrowed or sent to a celebrity—along with the items’ value. My form stated that the person signing out the merchandise was responsible.

If the product isn’t returned as promised, take copious notes on that form. Write down the date the items were taken, who you spoke with, and what they said. Sometimes just sending thorough documentation to the responsible party was enough for them to realize I meant business.

If the value of the product is of extreme value and the person still will not return it, consider reporting the loss to police or filing a small claims report.

If the value of the product you’ve sent the celebrity is of small value, let it go and move on.
